Eight dead in devastating bus crash in Thailand on New Year’s Day

A horrific bus crash in Surat Thani on New Year’s Day has resulted in at least eight fatalities and multiple injuries, casting a shadow over the holiday.

The incident occurred on the night of January 1, 2025, on Highway No. 41 near the Pa Way Intersection in Chai Ya, when a tour bus traveling from Yala to Bangkok veered off the road, crashing into a tree before overturning and falling into a ditch, Caliber.Az report via foreign media.

There were 30 passengers on board at the time of the crash. Eight people were confirmed dead at the scene. Emergency services responded swiftly to the accident, rushing the injured to nearby hospitals. A total of 30 passengers were injured in the crash, with several of them receiving immediate medical attention.

The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) Surat Thani Office confirmed that emergency responders arrived at the scene quickly, but despite their best efforts, five passengers were declared dead on-site. The remaining injured were promptly transported to hospitals.

Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, with a focus on factors such as road conditions, driver error, and mechanical failure.
