The American Civil War (1861–1865) was a major conflict between the United States and eleven Southern states that seceded to form the Confederate States of America, triggered by long‑standing disputes over slavery and state rights.
The war began when Confederate forces fired on Fort Sumter in April 1861 after the election of Abraham Lincoln, a candidate opposed to the expansion of slavery, leading to open hostilities that lasted four years.
The Union’s victory in 1865 preserved the United States and resulted in the abolition of slavery with the Thirteenth Amendment, but the conflict exacted enormous human and economic cost on the nation.
