Estonia boosts firepower with new South Korean Chunmoo rocket systems
Estonia has signed a contract for the delivery of three additional Chunmoo multiple launch rocket systems (MLRS) manufactured by the South Korean company Hanwha Aerospace, the Estonian Defence Ministry announced.
Defence Minister Hanno Pevkur said the new procurement would not only strengthen the country’s defence capabilities but also deepen cooperation with South Korean partners, Caliber.Az reports per Estonian media.
According to him, the partnership extends beyond the military sphere, as Hanwha Aerospace will invest part of the contract funds into Estonia’s economy.
The new agreement supplements a deal signed at the end of 2025, which provided for the delivery of six such systems.
The Chunmoo is a modern high-mobility multiple launch rocket system mounted on an 8×8 wheeled chassis.
It is capable of launching guided rockets with a range of up to 80 km, as well as long-range CTM-290 missiles with a strike range of up to 290 km.
The initial contract, valued at €290 million, includes the delivery of launchers, various types of missiles, and personnel training. It also stipulates that 20% of the agreement’s value will be invested in Estonia’s defence industry.
The first Chunmoo systems are expected to arrive in Estonia in the second half of 2027.
