Estonia open to discussing support for US mission in Strait of Hormuz

Estonia is prepared to discuss possible contributions to a US-led mission in the Strait of Hormuz if Washington makes a formal request, Foreign Minister Margus Tsahkna said on March 17.

Tsahkna noted that it remains unclear what Tallinn could offer at this stage and stressed that any involvement would depend on the specifics of a US proposal, Caliber.Az reports per ERR.

Oil prices have surged after Iran effectively shut the Strait of Hormuz — the world’s busiest oil shipping channel — to tankers following the outbreak of war between the United States, Israel and Iran just over two weeks ago.

Speaking about the escalating tensions, Tsahkna said the situation in the strategically vital waterway is highly volatile and that he sees no signs of de-escalation.

"The President of the United States has said that he expects support from NATO allies, but providing it does not happen in the abstract. Estonia's position is that if the United States raises this issue, for example, within NATO or bilaterally, we are certainly ready to discuss these questions," he added.

The foreign minister emphasised that clarity from Washington would be essential before any commitments are made.

"If we are talking about military assistance, there must be very clear plans," he stressed. "At present, we can say that the European side is not aware of the strategic objectives of the United States. To be honest, we were not aware even when this war began, so in that sense, there are many questions."
