Official: EU awaits "right conditions" for summit with US
The European Union (EU) is working on the idea of holding a summit with the United States and is waiting “when conditions allow”.
A senior EU official made the remarks speaking to reporters in Brussels ahead of a March 6 meeting of the Union leaders, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.
“We are ready. We welcome the idea and we are ready and we think it would be useful. We'll see when conditions allow. But it is an idea that we are working on,” he said.
Asked by reporters how Brussels was going to convince US President Donald Trump to talk to the EU, the diplomat said, “We welcome any possible contact with the US. Our main message is that the US is our ally, we see them as a friend and we want to develop this relationship. But we are focused on what we have to do. And that is first and foremost action in the area of our defense.”
Earlier, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni proposed an immediate summit of Europe, the US and its allies to discuss, among other things, Ukraine. Meloni also added that any division weakens the West and benefits no one.
