EU backs Greenland’s sovereignty, rejects Trump’s claims Joint Statement by European leaders

06 January 2026 17:35

Denmark has released a joint statement from European Union leaders sharply condemning US President Donald Trump’s territorial claims on Greenland.

The statement was signed by the presidents and prime ministers of France (Emmanuel Macron), Germany (Frank-Walter Steinmeier/Friedrich Merz), Italy (Giorgia Meloni), Poland (Donald Tusk), Spain (Pedro Sánchez), the United Kingdom (Keir Starmer), and Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Caliber.Az reports.

According to the document, NATO has emphasised the Arctic region as a priority, and that European allies are increasing their efforts.

“We and many other Allies have increased our presence, activities and investments, to keep the Arctic safe and to deter adversaries. The Kingdom of Denmark – including Greenland – is part of NATO. Security in the Arctic must therefore be achieved collectively, in conjunction with NATO allies including the United States, by upholding the principles of the UN Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity and the inviolability of borders,” the statement read.

The document emphasised that the United States is a key partner in this effort, both as a NATO ally and under the 1951 defence agreement between the Kingdom of Denmark and the United States.
