EU Commission chief urges EU to boost arms purchases directly from Ukraine
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has called on European Union countries to increase cooperation with Ukraine’s defence industry and buy weapons directly from Ukrainian manufacturers.
Speaking at the Ukraine Reconstruction Conference in Rome, von der Leyen highlighted that Ukrainian defence producers offer modern, high-quality weapon systems that can be delivered quickly and affordably. However, she noted their production capacity is currently only 60% utilised, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“This is exactly what EU countries need. Our member states can use SAFE loans to purchase directly from Ukraine. It benefits Europe and provides Ukraine with a critical source of income and defence sector strengthening,” von der Leyen said.
She also reaffirmed Europe’s unwavering support for Ukraine across military, financial, and political levels.
“We will stand by Ukraine for as long as necessary,” emphasised the European Commission president.
