EU confirms TikTok’s “extensive cooperation” in Romanian election case

The European Commission has said that TikTok is showing a high level of cooperation in an investigation into possible interference in Romania’s 2024 elections.

According to Reuters, the statement came from European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier.

In the autumn of 2024, Romania’s National Audiovisual Council requested that the European Commission open a formal probe into TikTok over concerns about the platform’s potential misuse. The request followed the unexpected strong performance of far-right politician Calin Georgescu, who emerged as the leading candidate in the first round of the presidential election.

The European Union officially launched the investigation in December 2024. Providing an update in 2026, the European Commission said TikTok has been “extremely cooperative” throughout the process.

Regnier noted that the company has taken a number of measures as part of its cooperation, adding that the case demonstrates the Commission’s willingness to work constructively with platforms that engage openly in investigations.

“This also shows that when there is a willingness to cooperate with the Commission, we are very happy to cooperate in return. TikTok is extremely cooperative,” he said.
