Brussels mulls ditching US AI for European-made technology

03 August 2026 11:58

The European Commission is considering replacing the US technology behind a new digital recruitment platform with European cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence services, a Commission spokesperson has confirmed to Euractiv.

The platform, called the Job Matching Application, is in the final stages of development. Euractiv previously reported that it was set to be hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and powered by the Claude large language model developed by US-based Anthropic.

The review follows an internal memorandum from the staff committee of the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), obtained by Euractiv, which raised concerns over using a US cloud provider to process applicants’ sensitive personal data.

Responding to Euractiv’s inquiry, a Commission spokesperson confirmed that the executive is evaluating the possibility of replacing the US-based digital infrastructure with European alternatives.

Earlier, European Commission Executive Vice-President Henna Virkkunen told the Financial Times that artificial intelligence has become a geopolitical instrument, making it essential for Europe to develop alternatives to US AI models.

In June, Brussels unveiled a package of measures aimed at strengthening the bloc’s strategic sovereignty by reducing its dependence on American technology through support for European alternatives in sectors including semiconductors, cloud computing and AI models.
