EU continues discussions on extending temporary protection for Ukrainians

18 May 2026 17:57

The European Union is continuing discussions on whether to extend temporary protection measures for displaced Ukrainians for an additional year, according to a spokesperson for the European Commission.

Speaking to reporters, European Commission spokesperson Markus Lammert said talks with EU member states are ongoing and no final decision has yet been made, Caliber.Az reports via Ukrainian media

“What I can say is that discussions are ongoing,” Lammert stated, adding that the Commission began consultations with member states in March during a meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council.

“We believe this is a necessary discussion. This is about supporting Ukraine and refugees from Ukraine,” he said.

Lammert emphasised that no agreement has been reached at this stage regarding the future of the temporary protection mechanism.

EU institutions and member states are considering several possible scenarios for the legal status of Ukrainians living in the bloc after March 2027. Options under discussion reportedly include both a further extension of temporary protection and the possible gradual termination of the programme.

The EU activated the Temporary Protection Directive shortly after Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, granting millions of displaced Ukrainians the right to live, work, and access social services across member states.
