EU declines to comment on Telegram founder’s detention Says it’s a national matter

06 September 2024 21:04

The European Commission (EC) has opted not to comment on the recent detention of Telegram founder Pavel Durov in France, clarifying that it falls outside the scope of its Digital Services Act (DSA) regulations.

Eric Mamer, a European Commission spokesperson, emphasized that the issue is a matter for French authorities and not within the purview of EU oversight, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

“We have consistently maintained that there is a clear distinction between French criminal procedures and the application of the DSA. We will refrain from commenting on this matter,” Mamer stated during a briefing in Brussels.

He reiterated that Telegram does not currently qualify as a “very large online platform” under the DSA, thus placing any compliance checks under the jurisdiction of national authorities rather than the European Commission.

This response follows reports that Pavel Durov expressed surprise at his detention in France, which is reportedly linked to an investigation involving the messaging service.
