EU envoy congrats Azerbaijani journalists on National Press Day

European Union (EU) Ambassador to Azerbaijan Peter Michalko has congratulated Azerbaijani journalists on the National Press Day.

A relevant publication was posted on the diplomat's Twitter page, Report informs.

Michalko emphasised that free and independent media are the basis of modern society.

"Congratulations to Azerbaijani journalists and media workers on their professional holiday! Free and independent media are the basis of modern society and deserve protection, support, and recognition for their important work!" his tweet reads.

For the record, 148 years ago, on 22 July 1875, the first issue of the newspaper Akinchi, founded by one of the prominent representatives of the enlightenment movement of his time Hasan bay Zardabi, was published, and thus the foundations of the national press in Azerbaijan were laid.
