EU: Iran must end attacks on regional countries immediately
European Council President António Costa has called for a diplomatic solution to the ongoing Middle East conflict, stressing that only negotiations can address its root causes.
In a statement on X, Costa condemned the targeting of civilian infrastructure, particularly energy facilities, as "illegal and unacceptable," applying this stance to both the Middle East and Russia’s war in Ukraine.
"As I stressed in my recent call with the President of Iran, Pezeshkian that, the European Union urges Iran to immediately put an end to its attacks against countries in the region and to allow for the reestablishment of full freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz," he wrote.
Costa emphasized that the Iranian civilian population is the primary victim of the conflict, urging Iran to cease its attacks on neighboring countries and allow free navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
He warned that further escalation would only prolong the violence, and highlighted the EU’s support for ongoing regional peace efforts.
