EU leaders equate Trump's Hormuz demands to "buying a ticket to the Titanic"
17 March 2026 14:57
European Union leaders have largely rejected U.S. President Donald Trump’s request to deploy naval vessels to escort oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz, as European governments seek to avoid becoming directly involved in the escalating Middle East conflict, France 24 reports.
Most EU countries are reluctant to take part in a U.S.-led maritime security mission in the strategically vital waterway.
One French official, speaking anonymously, reportedly described the proposal in stark terms, saying that “participating now would be buying a ticket to the Titanic after it had begun sinking.”
