EU legislature chief calls for creation of European Defense Union
President of the European Parliament (EP) Roberta Metsola has proposed the creation of the European Union of Defense.
Metsola believes that the security and defence union created by the EU would complement NATO, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media sources.
“The EU should always be stronger. Before asking ourselves what we expect from others, we must be <...> consistent and effective,” she said.
The politician added that EU countries should be ready for any danger, counting on their own strength.
Notably, the idea of creating a common EU army was already mentioned by the head of European diplomacy Josep Borrell. He noted that the EU would not have its own common army shortly. This is because many EU countries do not want to give up sovereignty in the field of defence, transferring part of their own powers under the jurisdiction of the EU.
Borrel said that defence issues should become the main topic of policy in the European Union. According to him, defence initiatives should become the “heart” of European policy.
Previously, Italian Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also backed the creation of the EU's own armed forces to prevent wars and maintain peace.: “If we want to be bearers of world peace, we need a European army. This is a fundamental prerequisite for an effective European foreign policy."
According to Tajani, in a world with multiple crises that cover a vast territory from the Middle East to the Indo-Pacific region, a common army for European countries should become a “concrete fact.”
