EU moves to extend protection for Ukrainians until 2028

The European Union is preparing to extend temporary protection for Ukrainians seeking refuge from the war for another year, until March 4, 2028.

According to several EU diplomats and officials familiar with the matter who spoke to European Pravda, the issue was included on the agenda of the Committee of Permanent Representatives of the EU (Coreper) meeting on July 15, Caliber.Az reports.

"Consideration of extending temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028 has already begun. The goal is to reach an agreement in principle," one source told the publication.

If no member state raises serious objections and an agreement in principle is reached, the proposal will return to Coreper after the completion of technical work on amendments to the Temporary Protection Directive for formal approval without discussion.

The EU proposal envisages extending temporary protection for Ukrainians until March 4, 2028, with an exception for individuals evading military service in Ukraine.
