EU prepares for potential Russian aggression with ambitious defence plan

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has announced the development of a new "Readiness 2030" strategic framework aimed at enhancing Europe's capacity to deter external threats and reinforce its collective defence posture by the end of the decade.

Speaking at the Defence Industry  Forum, von der Leyen emphasized the urgent need for a coordinated and forward-looking approach in response to growing security challenges, particularly the potential for Russian aggression within the next five years, Caliber.Az reports per Ukrainian media.

“"We know that Russia will be capable of testing our mutual defense commitments within the next five years. By 2030, Europe must have everything it needs for credible deterrence. This is what we call Readiness 2030," the European Commission President said.

According to her, developing this strategy requires a new mindset from everyone. It means being ready to step out of the comfort zone, seeking new ways of working by integrating technology and defence, as well as bridging the civilian and military sectors both within Europe and beyond.

Von der Leyen underscored the importance of unity and strategic innovation in facing future threats.

"I'm deeply convinced, with the right mindset, together, we can deter anyone who seeks to do us harm," von der Leyen added.

Following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Europe has begun to fear further Russian aggression and is actively preparing for it. This includes rearming its military and developing plans to repel a potential attack.

Recently, it was revealed that the German army has drafted a strategic document identifying Russia as an "existential risk" to both Germany and Europe as a whole.

Earlier, the German Bundeswehr had warned that Russia is preparing for a war with NATO and could be ready for it by the end of this decade.
