EU represents very essence of freedom, foreign policy chief says

09 December 2025 16:55

European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas dismissed claims that the bloc suppresses freedom of speech, asserting that such accusations are misplaced and that the European Union represents “the very essence of freedom.”

Speaking before the European Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee, Kallas emphasized that criticism of liberties within the EU “should be aimed in a different direction,” pointing specifically to Russia, where “dissent,” “free media,” and “political opposition” are banned. She added that even the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, is effectively restricted in Russia, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Kallas also addressed the United States’ national security strategy, noting that it encourages Europe to be “more self-confident when it comes to Russia, yes, but also when it comes to China and sometimes regarding our own allies like the United States.”

Her remarks follow recent comments from US President Donald Trump, who cautioned that Europe “has to be careful” after the European Commission imposed fines on X, describing the decision as “nasty.”

On December 5, the United States unveiled its latest national security strategy, underscoring a recalibrated approach toward Europe. The strategy highlights the need to restore strategic stability in US-Russia relations, enhance Europe’s autonomy and responsibility in its own defence, and curb further expansion of NATO.

The document’s release provoked critical responses across Europe. Germany’s Foreign Minister dismissed what he characterized as “external guidance” from the United States on European affairs, while Norway’s Foreign Minister remarked that “similar rhetoric has previously emanated from Moscow.” The European Commission underscored that, although the EU places great value on transatlantic relations, decisions concerning the Union’s policies and direction will be determined autonomously by the EU itself.
