EU Summit: Luxembourg's Bettel calls for stronger European defence
Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel, has voiced strong support for the European Commission's proposed plan to militarise Europe, urging the EU to proceed with arming itself, even if not all member states are on board.
Speaking upon his arrival at an emergency EU summit on defence, Bettel emphasised the need for increased European defence capabilities, suggesting that, should one or two countries refuse to share this vision, the remaining EU members should push forward as far as possible, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
“We need more European defence. If one or two countries disagree, the others should move ahead as far as they can,” Bettel stated, alluding to the anticipated veto from Hungary.
At the summit, EU leaders are expected to approve the European Commission’s plan to channel up to €800 billion into the continent's defence industry, with the aim of accelerating the ongoing arms race within Europe.
To recap, leaders of the EU's 27 member states are meeting in Brussels for a special European Council summit, with the future of the continent arguably hanging in the balance.
In response to President Donald Trump’s decision to reduce the U.S.’s involvement in Europe’s security and his push for an end to the Ukraine conflict through demands that Kyiv capitulate to Russia, European leaders will explore new strategies for financing defence and rearmament.
