EU takes major step to end Russian energy dominance with new phase-out strategy
The European Commission is preparing a roadmap for the EU’s full departure from Russian fossil energy resources, with plans to present it soon, as revealed by spokesperson Anna-Kaisa Itkonen during a briefing in Brussels.
Itkonen stated that the European Commission is working on a roadmap for the complete phase-out of Russian fossil fuels, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The EU Commissioner for Energy has promised to present this plan within the first 100 days of the new Commission’s term, which began on December 1, 2024. So, we still have a little time before its presentation."
She added that the EU has already made significant strides in reducing its reliance on Russian energy resources.
"We have fully phased out Russian coal, most Russian oil supplies, and two-thirds of Russian gas imports. However, despite these substantial achievements, we still see Russian gas present on the EU market… and this will be one of the key elements addressed in the roadmap," Itkonen explained.
