EU to discuss Trump’s Board of Peace for Gaza at emergency Greenland talks
EU leaders are set to discuss US President Donald Trump’s proposed Gaza Board of Peace when they convene for emergency talks on Greenland on January 22, according to the European Commission.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is expected to raise the issue with EU leaders following a US invitation for the European Union to join the initiative, a Commission spokesperson said on January 21, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Speaking at the Commission’s midday briefing, spokesperson Olof Gill said the EU welcomed the invitation and shared the objective of achieving peace, particularly as efforts move into the second phase of ending the Gaza conflict.
"We are actively discussing with the US how we can jointly reach this objective, and we stand in close contact also with our other partners on this matter," Gill said.
He added that von der Leyen is currently focused on preparations for the European Council meeting on January 22, where the US peace initiative is expected to be discussed.
The announcement of the Gaza Board of Peace coincided with the launch of phase two of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas, which halted Israel’s war on Gaza.
