EU to produce over million artillery shells annually Ammunition for Ukraine

EU countries are finalising projects that will develop the industry's capacity to produce more than one million munitions per year.

“Our ability to continue supporting Ukraine in the long term, meeting its needs, especially ammunition, will be discussed. I would like to remind you that we were able to quickly prepare a legal act, the so-called Act in Support of Ammunition Production (ASAP), to be able to produce more ammunition for Ukraine,” Breton said, RBC-Ukraine reports citing the statement of European Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton before an informal meeting of EU defence ministers in Spain.

He noted that the EU countries' goal is to produce more than one million such ammunition on an annual basis.

“For this purpose, we will use this new Act, passed by our legislators within just two months, to choose the right projects in Europe to help develop the capabilities in the production of ammunition and other weapons,” the European Commissioner added.

He noted that the selection process for such projects is currently at the final stage, based on the proposals that the European Commission has received from member states.

Breton is sure that this work will be carried out quickly and Europe will be able to greatly increase its defence capabilities, in particular, to fulfil its obligations to Ukraine.

The European Commissioner reminded that the EU countries have taken on the dual task of delivering ammunition to Ukraine and at the same time building up the capabilities of the European defence industry.

“As we have noted many times, we are organising the meetings at the EU level to help Ukraine as long as necessary. According to the adopted act, the EU will be able to financially support these projects for the production of ammunition, shells, everything that is required, including the production of missiles," Breton added.
