Ambrey: Comoros-flagged ship attacked in Red Sea near Yemen
Unidentified individuals in a wooden boat opened fire on a Comoros-flagged livestock carrier in the Red Sea near Yemen on July 24, British maritime security firm Ambrey has reported.
The vessel was en route from Bosaso, Somalia, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, when the incident occurred. According to Ambrey, the ship had received instructions to divert to the Yemeni port city of Mocha, though it remains unclear who issued the directive, Caliber.Az reports, citing Al Arabia.
The security firm has advised commercial vessels to avoid transiting east of the Hanish Islands — located approximately 30 nautical miles northwest of Mocha — and to keep a safe distance from any small boat activity in the area.
While the Iran-aligned Houthi group has frequently targeted commercial vessels in the Red Sea since the start of the Israel-Gaza war in October 2023, claiming such attacks are acts of solidarity with Palestinians, there has been no immediate claim of responsibility from the Houthis regarding this latest incident.
In response to previous attacks, Israel has conducted strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen. The Houthis maintain control over large parts of the country, including the strategic Hodeidah port.
