EU top diplomat accuses Israel of using hunger as weapon in Gaza
European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrel has said that Israel has disproportionately responded to the attack by militants of the radical Hamas movement and is using hunger as a weapon in the Gaza Strip.
"We are already in the midst of a catastrophe," he noted in an interview with the Spanish newspaper El Pais, TASS reports.
"The UN has been forced to suspend humanitarian aid: Israel is using hunger as a weapon, and this is contrary to international law. Gaza has been razed to the ground: the use of force was disproportionate," the diplomat concluded.
According to him, "Hamas is an idea, and an idea can only be fought with another idea."
Borrel found Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's plans for the Gaza Strip "unacceptable."
"The seeds of hatred are being sown for generations to come. It's no secret that the Israelis funded Hamas and played [a role] in dividing the Palestinians. Or that the US position affects [US President Joe] Biden's standing among the young democratic electorate," the EU diplomatic chief said.
