EU uncertain about top diplomat's potential visit to Georgia Amid election controversy

29 October 2024 21:54

The European Union has not confirmed whether Josep Borrell, the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, will visit Georgia to support the democratic opposition.

Nabila Massrali, EU spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, stated that there is currently no information regarding any planned visits, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

The uncertainty follows Georgia's parliamentary elections held on October 26, in which the ruling Georgian Dream party, in power since 2012, received 53.9 per cent of the vote, according to the Central Election Commission. Four major opposition parties also cleared the electoral threshold: Coalition for Change (11%), United National Movement (10.1%), Strong Georgia (8.8%), and Gakharia for Georgia (7.7%).

In the aftermath of the elections, Georgian President Salome Zourabichvili has alleged widespread fraud and has refused to recognize the election results.

The President stated that there was "total fraud" and a "total theft of votes" in the recent elections. She announced plans for a rally on October 28 at 7:00 PM local time to protest the electoral results.

"I invite all of you to join me tomorrow evening on Rustaveli Avenue so we can collectively declare to the world—and to ourselves—that we do not recognize these elections," she added.

Additionally, members of the Russian State Duma have expressed concerns that Western countries may attempt to instigate a color revolution in Georgia following the parliamentary victory of the Georgian Dream party.
