EU unwilling to join US in trade war with China, says von der Leyen
21 May 2024 14:08
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said the European Union (EU) has no intention of entering into a trade war with China, and Brussels' approach differs from Washington's.
"We want competition, we want to trade together, but we want it to be fair and according to the rules. This is a more differentiated, targeted approach (than the U.S.)," von der Leyen said in an interview with the Financial Times.
The European Commission head emphasised that there is no question of closing the European market from China.
She also admitted that the EU is concerned that ultra-cheap Chinese products are flooding the local market, adding that companies from Europe face problems when trying to enter the Chinese market on fair terms.
