EU warns of retaliation if US drops tariff deal

The European Union is prepared to introduce retaliatory measures against the United States if Washington decides to withdraw from an agreement on 15 per cent tariffs on European goods, US media reported, citing sources.

In March, the European Parliament ratified a trade agreement with the United States that formalised unilateral US tariffs of 15 per cent on EU goods and committed the bloc to purchasing €750 billion worth of US energy by the end of 2028.

Earlier, the Financial Times reported that US President Donald Trump could impose new tariffs on around a dozen countries as early as this week.

According to Politico, Ditte Juul Jørgensen, Director-General for Trade at the European Commission, told EU ambassadors that she expected the United States to honour the agreement.

She added that the European Commission would be ready to introduce countermeasures if the deal were breached.
