EU weighs new measures to secure Strait of Hormuz, says Kallas
EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas stated that it is in Europe’s interest to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, and member states are discussing potential actions, according to CNN.
“It is in our interest to keep the Strait of Hormuz open, and that’s why we are also discussing what we can do in this regard,” Kallas told reporters.
“From the European side, we have been in touch with the US colleagues on different levels on this, but of course, the situation is very volatile,” she added.
She made the remarks as President Donald Trump increased pressure on US allies to deploy ships to secure the strait, warning that NATO could face a “very bad” future if nations do not contribute.
Kallas emphasised that “it is out of NATO’s area of action.”
“There are no NATO countries in the Strait of Hormuz,” she noted.
