Euro-spies “slept through” Armenian provocation – the report remains “silent” Expert opinions

18 March 2025 14:27

The EU's spy mission, tasked with "monitoring" the conditional Armenia-Azerbaijan border, completely missed the shelling from the Armenian side. A hastily published report on the situation for March 16 and 17 categorically states: "The situation remains calm and quiet, with no unusual activity observed."

It seems that the "blind" and "deaf" Europeans are not even attempting to investigate why attacks on Azerbaijani territory by Armenian forces have intensified in recent days. This is precisely why Baku consistently opposes the presence of third-party forces at the border—this stance is reflected in the draft peace agreement, which the Armenian side recently verbally accepted.

Given that the Euro-spies "slept through" the Armenian army’s armed provocations, logical questions arise: Why does the EU encourage the destructive behaviour of its own mission? What are its true objectives? Seeking answers, a Caliber.Az correspondent reached out to foreign political analysts.

According to Israeli political analyst Dmitry Radyshevsky, wherever the EU intervenes today, the situation only worsens. This, he argues, is due to a lack of common sense, global responsibility, and the presence of either corruption or a rotten ideology within Western power centres.

“The EU fails to grasp Azerbaijan’s crucial role in ensuring stability in the South Caucasus, combating terrorism, and addressing regional security issues, including cooperation with Türkiye and Iran. If they understood this, they would be Azerbaijan’s allies. But instead, they engage in petty subversive actions. I cannot say for certain what the EU mission in Armenia is doing right now, but overall, their policy is aimed against progressive forces that bring peace to the region. Simply put, the EU is an enemy of America, Israel, and Azerbaijan,” Radyshevsky emphasized.

Kyrgyz political scientist and candidate of political sciences Umar Mutaliyev believes that this situation has further exposed the true nature of the EU monitoring mission’s activities in Armenia.

“The Armenian army’s shelling can no longer be blamed on some so-called separatists. It is evident that they are acting in coordination with the Europeans. The complete disregard for reality suggests that the EU mission is conducting its mysterious monitoring by observing something else on the Azerbaijani side—but certainly not the border. The discrepancy between the actual situation and what is stated in the March 16–17 report is simply too great. Peace and order exist only in the minds of the Europeans, but not on the ground.”

Under such circumstances, Azerbaijan has legitimate grounds to question the necessity of the EU mission’s continued presence at the border. It is clear that its activities are destabilising, undermine efforts to establish peace in the region, and serve only its own interests, the interlocutor notes.

"The question remains open—will Baku succeed in securing the withdrawal of the European mission, especially considering that Yerevan has officially (albeit only verbally for now) agreed to the condition prohibiting the presence of third-party forces, as stipulated in the draft peace treaty? Unfortunately, troubling signals are emerging in parallel: Armenia is discussing the possible expansion of American and European military presence, including in the border zone.

If these plans materialise, the situation is likely to deteriorate further. And if the signing of the peace treaty is delayed until Armenia fulfils all its obligations, tensions between Baku and Yerevan could reach their peak.

It is therefore entirely logical to expect that Baku will intensify pressure on Yerevan, making it clear that it expects results on this matter not in some distant future after the agreement is signed, but in the foreseeable future," Mutaliyev concluded.
