India extends ban on Pakistani aircraft flights until September 24

23 August 2025 17:52

India has extended its ban on Pakistani airlines and aircraft flights until the morning of September 24, continuing the mutual closure of airspace between the two countries that has been in effect for nearly five months.

The Indian Express reported that the relevant Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) was issued on August 22.

The current restrictions trace back to April, when Pakistan initially barred Indian aircraft following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam. India responded on April 30 with reciprocal measures. Since then, both nations have been extending the ban on a monthly basis, preventing airlines from using each other’s airspace.

The closure has significantly impacted Indian carriers, with around 800 weekly flights forced to reroute around Pakistani airspace. This has resulted in longer travel times, higher fuel consumption, and additional logistical challenges.

The financial toll on Indian airlines is substantial. During a similar closure of Pakistani airspace in 2019, Indian carriers reportedly incurred losses of approximately Rs 700 crore, primarily due to increased fuel costs and operational difficulties from longer routes. At that time, Air India was the most affected, operating numerous westbound international flights and maintaining ultra-long-haul services to North America.

Currently part of the Tata Group, Air India has estimated that the ongoing closure could cost the airline around $600 million on an annualised basis.

Other Indian carriers, including IndiGo, have also expanded their international networks in recent years, leveraging their existing narrow-body fleets to serve destinations across Europe, Central Asia, the Caucasus, and Türkiye. Notably, IndiGo remains the only Indian airline providing flights to these specific regions.
