Euronews highlights Azerbaijan’s multiculturalism, religious tolerance traditions

12 July 2026 16:03

Euronews has published a special report titled “How this country's faiths have coexisted for centuries,” focusing on Azerbaijan’s longstanding traditions of multiculturalism and religious tolerance.

The report notes that at a time when religion has become a major source of conflict in many parts of the world, the peaceful coexistence of different faiths and beliefs has gained particular significance.

According to Euronews, Azerbaijan stands out in the South Caucasus as a country where Muslim, Christian, and Jewish communities have lived side by side for centuries, with multiculturalism becoming an important part of the nation’s identity.

The feature, filmed at the Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, explores the activities of Azerbaijan’s Catholic community and the traditions of cooperation that have developed among the country’s religious groups. Representatives of the Catholic Church said leaders of various religious communities regularly meet and actively cooperate on issues of common social importance.

The report also highlights the ancient Kish Church and historic churches in the Gakh district as important symbols of Azerbaijan’s rich Christian heritage and religious diversity. These monuments, preserved for centuries, reflect the coexistence of different cultures and faiths in the country.

In an interview with Euronews, Ravan Hasanov, Executive Director of the Baku International Multiculturalism Centre, described the Azerbaijani model as an example of multiculturalism based on mutual trust and respect, implemented both in public life and at the institutional level.

Euronews draws attention to Azerbaijan's efforts to promote multiculturalism and interfaith dialogue, as well as its support for restoring mosques, churches, and synagogues.

It also notes that projects carried out by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in cooperation with the Vatican Apostolic Library and the Vatican Apostolic Archive to digitize and restore manuscripts form part of the country’s cultural diplomacy efforts.

The report concludes that, at a time when conflicts dominate the agenda in many regions of the world, examples of dialogue and coexistence are especially important, and in Azerbaijan this approach is reflected not only in official initiatives but also in everyday life.
