Europe explores plan to “save” Greenland from Trump

12 January 2026 17:35

The European Union should offer Greenland membership amid US President Donald Trump’s remarks about potentially acquiring the island, former German Vice-Chancellor Robert Habeck and Fridtjof Nansen Institute senior researcher Andreas Raspotnik argued in a joint article for The Guardian.

“As debates increasingly revolve around acquiring – or even occupying – the island, Europe’s lack of a counterproposal is striking. This should be the moment to explicitly offer EU membership to Greenland, and by extension to the Faroe Islands, Iceland and Norway – an idea recently raised in the European Parliament,” the authors wrote.

Habeck and Raspotnik suggested the proposal could be “pragmatic and phased,” with Greenland potentially joining the EU in 2026 or 2027.

The agreement could include a major investment package to develop infrastructure, alongside a “clear commitment to preserving Inuit culture, language and local decision-making.”

Trump has previously stated that the US would acquire Greenland “one way or another” and mocked Denmark’s claim to the territory, arguing that landing a boat there 500 years ago does not make it theirs.
