Europe risks “losing its way” by aligning with Trump, EU chief says

24 April 2026 17:12

The European Union’s top leadership has warned member states that the bloc risks losing its strategic direction if it aligns too closely with the United States under Donald Trump’s leadership.

In remarks reported by Bloomberg, the European Council President Antonio Costa stressed that Europe must avoid becoming overly dependent on shifting US political priorities, particularly as Washington pursues a more unilateral and unpredictable foreign policy approach under President Donald Trump.

The warning comes amid growing internal debate within the EU over how far the bloc should coordinate with the United States on trade, security, and geopolitical issues, especially regarding the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

EU officials are increasingly concerned that following Washington too closely could undermine Europe’s push for “strategic autonomy” — a policy goal aimed at making the bloc more independent in defence, energy, and economic policy.

The comments reflect broader tensions in transatlantic relations, with European leaders divided between maintaining close ties with the U.S. and pursuing a more independent global role in response to geopolitical instability.

According to sources, EU leaders agreed that the repercussions of the conflict surrounding Iran are set to intensify; however, the bloc has yet to reach a unified position on its next course of action.
