Europe’s drone war push drives demand for Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30
European militaries are increasingly turning to mobile short-range air-defence systems as drones and loitering munitions become a growing threat on modern battlefields. Among the systems attracting attention is Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30, a modular turret designed to provide air protection without requiring armies to purchase an entirely new combat vehicle.
According to The Defense Post’s original analysis, the system addresses one of the traditional obstacles to rebuilding short-range air defence: the high cost of acquiring dedicated vehicles, training personnel and maintaining separate fleets.
The Skyranger 30 instead can be integrated onto armoured platforms already operated by customers, including the Boxer, Lynx KF41, Pandur EVO, Piranha V and ACSV Super Bison.
Built for the drone threat
At the centre of the system is a 30mm Oerlikon KCE-ABM automatic cannon capable of firing up to 1,250 rounds per minute. It uses programmable airburst ammunition designed to explode near targets and release sub-projectiles, increasing the likelihood of hitting small and fast-moving aerial threats.
The cannon has an engagement range of up to 3 kilometres against aerial targets, depending on the target and ammunition used. The turret can also be equipped with short-range surface-to-air missiles, including Stinger and Mistral, giving operators additional engagement options.
The system is intended to counter a broad range of threats, including small and medium-sized drones, loitering munitions, helicopters, cruise missiles, rockets and low-flying aircraft.
Mobile air-defence node
The Skyranger 30 combines a 360-degree AESA search radar with electro-optical sensors and optional infrared and tracking radars. Its digital fire-control system is designed to detect, classify and track multiple aerial targets while allowing the system to operate on the move.
This sensor fusion is intended to shorten reaction times and improve the system’s ability to distinguish and engage different types of threats in complex conditions.
The turret itself is unmanned and remotely controlled. This eliminates the need for a turret basket and creates additional space inside the host vehicle for crew members and mission equipment.
European militaries expand adoption
The system has gained customers as European countries seek to rebuild ground-based air defences after years of relatively limited investment.
Hungary became the launch customer in 2023, selecting the Skyranger 30 for its Lynx KF41 infantry fighting vehicles. Germany subsequently ordered Boxer-mounted systems, while Austria selected the turret for its Pandur EVO vehicles. Denmark and the Netherlands have also selected the system for their future mobile air-defence capabilities.
Germany is additionally planning to integrate MBDA’s DefendAir counter-drone missile with its Skyranger systems, extending their ability to engage small unmanned aircraft.
A key layer, but not a complete shield
The Skyranger 30’s main advantage is its combination of mobility, rapid-fire cannon technology, programmable ammunition, sensors and optional missiles in a single modular system.
However, its short-range design means it cannot replace longer-range air-defence systems. The Defense Post analysis notes that its effectiveness is also dependent on the vehicle carrying the turret and on integration with external sensors, command-and-control networks and broader air-defence architecture.
With more militaries adapting to the proliferation of inexpensive drones, the Skyranger 30 is positioned as one component of a layered defence approach. Its future development is expected to focus on greater automation, improved sensors, battlefield-network integration and compatibility with new weapons.
The system’s growing European customer base suggests that modularity may become increasingly important as governments seek to restore mobile air defences without building entirely new vehicle fleets.
