Europe’s gas reserves approach historic low amid weak storage build-up

02 August 2026 14:05

Net gas injections into European underground storage facilities — the difference between gas injected and withdrawn — reached a six-year low in July amid hot weather and declining liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports.

According to TASS calculations based on data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE), storage levels at the end of the month came close to a historic low.

Gas withdrawals from European storage facilities exceeded 1 billion cubic meters in July for the first time in four years, marking a 55% increase compared with 2025.

At the same time, gas injections into storage facilities fell to a two-year low of 9.6 billion cubic meters.

As a result, total net gas injections in July were 21% lower than last year and reached their lowest level in six years, amounting to just 8.5 billion cubic meters.
