European Commission head urges EU unity amidst global disorder

16 May 2025 19:50

At the 6th Summit of European Political Community in Tirana on May 16, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered a compelling address, asserting that the world order has devolved into global disorder.

Reflecting on the post-Cold War era, she remarked that the optimism following the fall of the Berlin Wall, when many believed "history was over," has been replaced by renewed geopolitical tensions, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

"We see that today it has resumed again," she stated, underscoring the resurgence of historical conflicts and challenges .

Von der Leyen emphasized Europe's need for unity in the face of these global challenges. She expressed hope that Europe would emerge from the current crisis stronger than before, highlighting the importance of collective action and solidarity among European nations.

Addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, von der Leyen reaffirmed Europe's commitment to peace and support for Ukraine. She pledged continued backing for Ukraine and reiterated that Brussels intends to adopt new sanctions against Russia, including measures related to the Nord Stream gas pipelines.

These sanctions aim to intensify pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin over the ongoing war in Ukraine. The EU is preparing a new package of sanctions, which may include a ban on the Nord Stream pipelines, lower crude oil price caps, sanctions on Russia’s "shadow fleet," and additional restrictions on the Russian financial sector.
