European Council calls extraordinary meeting on US Greenland ultimatum
European Union leaders are set to convene an emergency summit in Brussels in the coming days to coordinate a response to escalating threats by US President Donald Trump related to Greenland, POLITICO reports.
The leaders of the EU’s 27 member states will meet “in the coming days” to address Trump’s warning that Washington could impose tariffs on countries that refuse to support his plans to take control of Greenland, European Council President António Costa announced.
Costa decided to call an extraordinary meeting of the European Council following urgent consultations among EU ambassadors in Brussels on January 18. The discussions were prompted by Trump’s statement on January 17 in which he reiterated his intention to “buy” Greenland and threatened punitive trade measures against European countries that oppose his plans.
According to an EU official and a diplomat familiar with the preparations, the summit is expected to take place on January 22. The meeting will be held in person, with all EU leaders required to attend physically rather than via a virtual format, underscoring the seriousness of the situation.
The emergency summit is expected to focus on the broader implications of Trump’s remarks for transatlantic relations, EU unity, and potential economic retaliation, as well as the bloc’s collective stance on Greenland’s status and security in the Arctic.
