European Public Prosecutor’s Office seeks to lift immunity of Polish MP

05 May 2026 18:01

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) has submitted a request to the Polish Parliament (Sejm) to lift the parliamentary immunity of a sitting MP as part of an investigation into alleged corruption linked to an EU-funded infrastructure project.

The request was filed by Chief Prosecutor Laura Kövesi. The identity of the MP has not been disclosed. The case concerns suspected “trading in influence” involving a company participating in the modernisation of tram infrastructure in the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis.

Investigators say the project, implemented between 2007 and 2027 and financed with nearly €450 million from EU funds, may have involved a corruption scheme. In particular, authorities suspect that costs were inflated through the inclusion of fictitious expenses in the budget.

In December 2025, one official linked to the case was detained and remains in custody. He is suspected of passing confidential information to a contractor company, potentially helping it secure the contract.

Investigators also have indications that the MP may have benefited from the arrangement. Searches have been carried out at his premises in recent weeks.

The European Public Prosecutor’s Office is an independent EU body responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes affecting the financial interests of the European Union.

Similar investigations have previously been conducted in cases involving former officials in Bulgaria’s Varna over alleged fraud with infrastructure funds. The European Parliament recently also lifted immunity from four Polish MEPs, including Grzegorz Braun, as well as Romanian parliamentarian Diana Șoșoacă.
