European top officials urge Iran, Hezbollah to stop attacks on Israel

02 October 2024 14:49

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has condemned Iran's missile strikes on Israel and urged all parties to ensure the safety of civilians.

“I condemn yesterday's ballistic missile attack launched by Iran against Israel in the strongest terms. Such actions threaten regional security and escalate tensions in an already volatile situation. I urge all parties to prioritize the safety of civilians," Caliber.Az reports, citing von der Leyen’s message on X.

The president of the European Commission also called for ceasefires in Lebanon and Gaza, as well as the release of all hostages.

Moreover, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also called on Iran and Hezbollah to immediately halt their attacks on Israel.

He emphasised that Tehran's actions pose a threat of "igniting" the entire Middle East.

The chancellor condemned Iran's missile strike on Israel on October 1 "in the strongest possible terms". "Iran risks setting the entire region ablaze - this must be prevented at all costs.

Hezbollah and Iran must cease their assaults on Israel without delay," Scholz stated.

He assured that Germany will continue collaborating with its partners to achieve a ceasefire.

Iran launched dozens of missiles toward Israel on October 1 in what it said was a response to the killing of Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and others – potentially taking the region closer to a wider conflict. Dozens of missiles piercing through the skies were observed as sirens blasted across the country.

At least one person was killed and several were injured during the attack, according to the Israeli military. International spokesman for the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) Nadav Shoshani said that one Palestinian was killed in Jericho as a result of the attacks. Israel has vowed to respond to the attack – sparking worries among its allies that the conflict in the Middle East could escalate further.
