Ex-German FM calls for nuclear rearmament in Europe
Former German Foreign Minister Joschka Fischer of the Green Party has called for a nuclear rearmament of Europe.
“Europe must take this step because American security guarantees can no longer be considered reliable. Germany certainly bears responsibility for leadership in Europe, but always in cooperation with others,” Fischer told Tagesspiegel in an interview, per Caliber.Az.
He proposed a joint nuclear deterrent for all EU countries and cautioned against the idea of a national nuclear program, emphasising that Germany “must never act alone again. We need our European partners.”
Fischer also admitted that under current circumstances, if he were younger, he would join the Bundeswehr: “Times have changed. We are under threat. We must defend ourselves. I never imagined I would say this. My entire political career has largely argued the opposite.”
