Ex-student arrested after stabbing spree and bomb threat in California's Torrance

14 October 2025 13:36

A former student at a California school allegedly attacked staff with a knife and planted explosive devices before being apprehended, US media reported.

The incident occurred on October 13 at around 8:15 a.m. at the Switzer Learning Centre in Torrance. According to the Torrance Police Department, the former student allegedly stabbed three staff members and attempted to stab a fourth before fleeing the scene.

Two of the victims were quickly transported to Harbour General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries, while the third was treated on-site by the Torrance Fire Department, police said.

After the attack, law enforcement took the suspect into custody. During questioning, the individual reportedly claimed to have placed two pipe bombs near 208th Street and Amapola Avenue.

Officers located the devices, which were identified as incendiary in nature and were safely neutralised by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Bomb Squad. Authorities confirmed that after a thorough assessment, the area posed no ongoing threat to the public.

The police have not released the suspect’s name, age, or a possible motive. They emphasised that the investigation remains active and ongoing.

“The safety of our community is our top priority, and we appreciate the public’s cooperation during this ongoing investigation,” the Torrance Police Department said.

Authorities also thanked the media and assisting agencies for their swift response, stressing that the security of community members remains paramount.
