Expert: US needs mutually beneficial relations with China

16 February 2025 16:47

Expert from the Centre for International Security and Strategy at China's Tsinghua University Gao Jian has said that the US must build mutually beneficial relations with China if they wish to transform their economy and overcome internal societal conflicts.

"If the US government wants to transform the US economy and resolve internal societal conflicts, it must establish mutually beneficial trade and economic relations with China. This means that there is still ample room for cooperation between China and the US," said the expert, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

He noted that eight years ago, the US administration led by Trump attempted to suppress the Chinese economy by halting exports, forcing global manufacturing to return to the US.

"The goals and objectives of new Trump administration's foreign economic and trade policy have not fundamentally changed," he noted, adding that during Trump’s new term, his diplomatic methods may become more radical.

"However, Trump, now in power for a second term, should be more pragmatic and specific regarding China. I believe his team has a deep understanding of the independent national spirit of the Chinese people, the resilience of the Chinese economy, and the rapid development of Chinese science and technology," Gao Jian said.

"The strategy of raising tariffs by 10 per cent on China is experimental in nature. The US economic and trade policy toward China needs further revision. However, I personally believe in one thing: in the future, the foreign economic and trade policy of the Trump administration should be based on realism and a dilution of ideological characteristics," he stated.

While speaking about China's response to the tariffs imposed by Trump, Gao Jian noted that it was timely and decisive. "This response deserves careful analysis. The consistent stance of the Chinese government is to oppose trade protectionism and maintain an international economic order characterized by global free trade," he said.

"Compared to eight years ago, the Chinese government's policy response to extreme US trade protectionism has become much clearer, demonstrating China's firm political stance and self-assurance," he said, adding that the Chinese government is well-prepared to handle a trade war and possesses a mature mechanism to respond to shifts in the global economic landscape.

Gao Jian also emphasised that stable China-US trade and economic relations play a crucial role in the development of the global economy.
