Explosion, fire rock major munitions plant near Rome

A fire and explosion struck a major munitions plant in Colleferro, south of Rome, ANSA reports.

The incident occurred at the former Simmel Difesa facility, now owned by KNDS Ammo Italy. The company manufactures medium- and large-caliber ammunition for land and naval defence, as well as solid propellants for aerospace launch systems.

The blast reportedly occurred in the plant’s powder pressing department.

Several firefighting crews have been deployed to the site, although they have not yet been able to intervene, according to initial reports.

Authorities have yet to provide details on possible casualties or the cause of the incident.
