Explosions rock Yemen's capital as strikes target Houthi facilities VIDEO

28 December 2024 10:08

Heavy explosions have shaken Sanaa, Yemen’s capital, as strikes hit multiple Houthi-controlled sites.

Targeted facilities include workshops involved in weapon production, Caliber.Az reports referencing foreign media sources.

The bombings are believed to be the result of US Air Force strikes, according to Israel’s Channel 12, although Houthi media claim the attacks were conducted by US-British forces, with one of the targeted sites being the former First Division headquarters.

This escalation follows a series of airstrikes in late December.

On December 26, Israeli warplanes targeted Yemen's international airport, along with key ports and power stations on the Red Sea coast. The strikes resulted in at least four deaths.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Israel’s actions in response to missile and drone attacks from the Iran-backed Houthis were "just getting started."

The Houthis, who control north-western Yemen, began attacking Israel and international shipping shortly after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza in October 2023.

Israel has carried out four rounds of air strikes against the Houthis since July in retaliation for the 400 missiles and drones that the Israeli military says have been launched at the country from Yemen, most of which have been shot down.

In addition to Israeli actions, the US and the UK have also targeted Houthi positions in response to their assaults on merchant vessels in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The ongoing violence has raised fears of a broader regional escalation.

UN spokesperson Stéphanie Tremblay voiced concerns, with Secretary-General António Guterres urging all parties to cease military actions and show restraint to avoid further conflict.
