FAA investigates possible fireworks strike on Delta flight during Chicago approach
The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating an incident that occurred during Independence Day celebrations, when a Delta Air Lines passenger aircraft allegedly collided with high-altitude fireworks while approaching landing in Chicago.
According to CNBC, the pilot of Delta Flight 1076, travelling from Atlanta to Chicago Midway International Airport, reported a loud impact during descent at an altitude of around 60–76 meters. The crew suspected the aircraft may have been hit by an exploding firework.
The Airbus A319, carrying 52 passengers and six crew members, landed safely at approximately 8:30 p.m. local time (05:30 the following day in Baku). No injuries were reported.
Delta said a post-landing inspection found no damage to the aircraft.
The FAA confirmed that an investigation has been opened. Air traffic control audio indicated that multiple crews had also reported possible firework-related incidents in the area that evening, although no official confirmation of additional cases has been issued.
