Finland approves law allowing transit of nuclear weapons through its territory

Finnish President Alexander Stubb has signed amendments to Finland’s Nuclear Energy Act that would allow the import and transit of nuclear weapons through the country’s territory, according to a statement published on the website of the Finnish Parliament.

The amendments are set to take effect on July 1 and will lift previous restrictions on such activities, the parliamentary publication said.

As a result of the change, nuclear weapons belonging to NATO allies could potentially be transported through Finland, which shares a border with Russia.

The Finnish Parliament has not provided additional public details on how the new provisions will be implemented in practice or under what specific conditions transit would be permitted.
