Yle: Finland begins building fence just one metre from Russian border
Finnish authorities have started building a fence just one metre from the country’s border with Russia, Yle reports.
According to a spokesperson for Finland’s Border Guard, cameras will be installed at intervals along the barrier to ensure “constant monitoring of the eastern border.”
The northern region of Lapland is reported to be almost ready, with final inspections scheduled for 9 December. Officials expect the fence to be completed by summer 2026.
The Finland–Russia border stretches over 1,300 kilometres. However, the government will not be able to fence the entire length due to financial constraints, with construction costs estimated at around €1.8 million per kilometre.
The completed sections of the barrier are expected to exceed 200 kilometres, at a total projected cost of approximately €362 million.
