Finland to create specialized units to counter drone threats
12 June 2026 19:02
Finland plans to create dedicated military units to counter unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), said Mano-Mikael Nokelainen, Air Defence Inspector, the publication Ruotuväki reports.
“In the future, the Defence Forces will establish separate units to combat drones, equipped with a variety of means to counter the threat posed by UAVs,” Nokelainen said.
He noted that conscripts joining the armed forces will need to wait several years before such training becomes available, as instruction for these specialized units is not planned for 2026 or 2027.
The initiative reflects growing attention within European defence structures to emerging aerial threats and the increasing role of UAVs in modern military operations.
