Finland to introduce citizenship test from March 2027

08 August 2026 17:41

Finland will introduce a mandatory citizenship test from March 2, 2027, requiring applicants to demonstrate knowledge of the country’s society, according to the national broadcaster Yle, citing the migration authorities.

“From March 2, 2027, all those who apply for citizenship will have to pass an exam assessing their knowledge of Finnish society,” the authorities said.

Applicants who submit their citizenship requests before that date will not be required to take the test.

The exam will cover the structure and foundations of Finnish society, legislation, human rights, equality, as well as the country’s culture and history. It will be administered electronically in Finnish or Swedish and will be available to individuals aged between 18 and 65.

Exemptions will apply to applicants who have completed secondary or higher education in either Finnish or Swedish.
