Fire at Indian hospital leaves six patients dead
At least six patients have died in a fire at the trauma center of a government hospital in Jaipur, India.
According to NDTV, the victims include two women and four men.
The fire reportedly broke out in a storage area, likely caused by a short circuit. Thick smoke quickly spread through the building, creating chaos and panic among patients.
Hospital staff managed to evacuate some of the patients.
“We were in the operating room when we heard about the fire, so we immediately rushed to rescue people inside the center. We managed to save at least three to four patients, but as the flames grew stronger, we could no longer enter the building,” one staff member said.
He added that the police arrived later but were unable to enter the building immediately due to the heavy smoke. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze after two hours.
Local authorities have announced the formation of a committee to conduct a thorough investigation and prevent similar incidents in the future.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences over the tragedy.
